Newcastle is a modern, yet old and beautiful city. It is thought to be the seventh largest city in Australia, as well as on of the most cultured.
Newcastle was first inhabited by Aboriginals, and it remained hidden from Europeans, until September, 1797, when John Shortland became the first European to explore the area. He was sent to Australia to find convicts who had captured a ship as she was sailing out of the Sydney Harbour, and came across Newcastle. Newcastle is famous for it's coal, and is the largest coal export in the world. Originally, Newcastle was a place where the most dangerous convicts were sent to work in the mines as punishment for their crimes. Don't worry though, Newcastle no longer has convicts, and the majority of the 552, 800 people are nice! |
